Wyatt Larkins wins hammer bronze for Great Britain in Oregon

Wyatt Larkins secured the first medal for Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships. The 19-year-old Harrow AC athlete threw a personal best of 75.38m in the men's hammer final to claim the bronze medal. Entering the competition ranked 12th, Larkins maintained a position on the podium from his first attempt, with all six of his throws exceeding his previous lifetime best.

China's Chen Jiawei took the gold medal after improving his opening throw of 78.47m to a winning mark of 79.16m in the final round. This victory marked a second throws title for the Chinese team following Su Yixin's discus gold. The silver medal went to 17-year-old American Kayden Hulet, who finished with a final-round throw of 77.55m after a series that included marks of 73.71m and 74.68m.

Other notable results from the third day in Eugene included Jamaica's Michael-Andre Matthew Edwards winning the men's triple jump. Edwards became the first U20 athlete this year to clear 17 metres, recording a final-round personal best of 17.08m. He defeated USA's Miles Nesmith, who took silver with a 16.79m leap, while China's Wang Zhuoyue earned bronze before retiring from the event due to discomfort.

In the field, South Africa's Jan-Hendrik Heymans won the javelin with a personal best of 80.50m, which stands as the fourth-farthest winning throw in the history of the championships. India's Ashish Yadav took silver with 74.09m, and Dominica's Addison James secured bronze with a national record of 73.89m.

On the track, Kenya's Emmanuel Kiprono won the men's 3000m in 7:28.28, nearly breaking the world U20 record. France's Alois Abraham finished second, and Japan's Ojiro Honda took bronze in a national U20 record of 7:48.49. In the men's 400m, USA's Jayden Deleon won in 44.47 seconds, ahead of teammate Quincy Wilson, who finished in 44.62 seconds. Poland's Anastazja Kuś won the women's 400m in a national U20 record of 51.06 seconds, beating American Ataja Stephane-Vasquez.
