Yacare will play in Super Rugby Americas 2027 after survival doubts

Paraguay’s Yacare will remain in Super Rugby Americas for 2027, ending fears of a collapse and bringing plans for more home fixtures.

Yacare will remain in Super Rugby Americas for the 2027 season, ending uncertainty over the Paraguayan club’s future in the regional competition. The decision means the league will again have eight teams, matching the number that took part in 2026.

The club’s continuation had been in doubt earlier this year. In April, Gustavo Borgognon, president of the Unión de Rugby del Paraguay, warned that Yacare was operating at an economic loss and was struggling to build a significant fan base. Those concerns raised the possibility that Paraguay would no longer have a team in the competition.

That threat has now passed, with the Paraguayan rugby federation maintaining its involvement in Super Rugby Americas. Yacare’s return preserves the competition’s structure from last season and keeps Paraguay among the countries represented in the South American league.

Argentina will again provide four of the eight teams, giving it half of the competition’s places. Yacare’s survival therefore also maintains the current balance of the tournament, while the league continues to look towards adding more teams over time.

The club’s 2027 plans will include changes to its home schedule. Yacare intends to stage more home fixtures in Argentine provinces as it seeks to connect with supporters beyond Paraguay. The proposed locations include Corrientes, Chaco, Formosa and Misiones in the northeast, with Neuquén also being considered in west-central Argentina near the northern end of Patagonia.

Yacare already moved one home fixture during the 2026 campaign. Its match against Los Tarucas was played at Estadio Aranduroga Rugby Club in Corrientes province. Further relocations in 2027 would extend that approach and give the Paraguayan side a wider presence across Argentina while keeping it in Super Rugby Americas.
