Zimbabwe rugby future mapped in World Rugby talks with minister

Zimbabwe’s rugby plans beyond the 2027 Rugby World Cup were discussed by Sports Minister Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Anselem Sanyatwe, World Rugby chairman Brett Robinson and Rugby Africa president Herbert Mensah. The meeting focused on using the Sables’ qualification to strengthen the sport from grassroots level to the international team.

Zimbabwe will return to the World Cup in Australia in 2027, marking the national team’s first appearance at the tournament since 1991. The qualification was formally recognised during the meeting, which was arranged by the Zimbabwe Rugby Union and included discussions on preparation, competition planning and the future structure of the game.

Governance stability was also central to the talks. Reforms at the Zimbabwe Rugby Union were described as having restored institutional stability, while the government reaffirmed its support for the union and the national team. Rugby Africa is expected to continue working with the union to promote continuity and help Zimbabwe make the most of its World Cup return.

The parties reviewed the Sables’ competition and preparation programme, including their place in World Rugby’s expanded international pathway. Zimbabwe also has Northern Hemisphere Test matches scheduled for November 2026 as part of its build-up to the tournament in Australia.

The development agenda extends beyond the senior team. The discussions included plans to increase participation at grassroots level and give Rugby Sevens a larger role ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles and 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games. The stated aim is to create sustained opportunities for players and preserve momentum after 2027.

Robinson and Mensah were joined by World Rugby’s chief of international federation, David Carrigy, and David Gilbert, an adviser to the Rugby Africa president and former Botswana Rugby Union president. Zimbabwe’s delegation included deputy minister Emily Jesaya, Dr Samakande from the Arts and Culture Directorate, interim Zimbabwe Rugby Union management committee chair Paddy Zhanda and general manager Takunda Chifokoyo. Robinson also presented Sanyatwe and Jesaya with a World Rugby ceremonial salver and a 2027 World Cup match ball.
