Academy defender Jake Vallance signs first professional contract

Southampton academy defender Jake Vallance has signed his first professional contract. The 17-year-old versatile defender has committed his future to his childhood club following a period of rapid development.

Vallance joined the Saints from Basingstoke Town in 2024. His progression through the youth ranks has been significant, moving from grassroots football to senior academy levels in a short timeframe. Last season, he featured in 25 Under-18 Premier League matches and made four appearances for the Under-21 side in Premier League 2.

His recent form also earned him international recognition. The defender received his first cap for the Scotland Under-19 national team during a successful campaign. This follows his transition from non-league football to the professional academy structure.

Andy Goldie, the Director of Group Talent Strategy, noted that Vallance made his debuts for both the Under-21s and the international side within 18 months of joining the academy. Goldie stated that the player's progress is a result of his desire to learn, his daily standards, and his humility.

The new contract covers the next three years. Goldie added that signing a professional deal at the club he supported as a boy will be a significant moment for the player and his family.
