Adebayo backs Malawi to win WAFCON after Algeria victory

Femmco Football Academy head coach Oluwafemi Adebayo believes Malawi are destined to win the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. His comments follow the Scorchers' 3-1 semi-final victory over Algeria, which secured their place in the tournament final.

Adebayo stated that he began to see Malawi as potential champions immediately after their opening match against Nigeria. The Scorchers secured a major upset against the ten-time winners, the Super Falcons, in their first Group C encounter. While that result was initially viewed as a surprise, Adebayo believes it served as an early sign of the team's true capability.

Malawi's campaign has seen them progress from tournament newcomers to semi-finalists. During this run, the Scorchers have also secured qualification for the World Cup. Their recent win against Algeria ensures they are now one match away from claiming the continental trophy.

Despite the historic achievement, Adebayo has advised the Malawian players and coaching staff to remain calm. He warned against letting the excitement of their progress impact their performance in the final. The coach emphasized that the team must maintain their existing discipline, energy, and organization to succeed.
