Adrien Broner’s latest appearance raises doubts over ring return
Adrien Broner’s physical condition and confused interview have cast fresh doubt on whether the former four-division champion can return to boxing.
Adrien Broner’s hopes of returning to the ring have come under serious doubt after a troubling public appearance. The 36-year-old former four-division world champion was seen with a pronounced stomach, spoke slowly and struggled to provide clear answers during an interview.
Broner repeatedly lost his train of thought and moved away from the questions put to him. He also said he could not recall an earlier video involving “Slap Floyd”. When the discussion turned towards the possibility of one more nostalgic fight, he became distracted and returned to talking about his streaming work.
The interview gave Broner an opportunity to address concerns about his recent condition. He rejected the suggestion that his life had completely gone off course, although he acknowledged that circumstances could become difficult. His explanation did little to ease the concerns raised by the appearance.
Broner later apologised to Shakur Stevenson, Terence Crawford and other people who had seen him in what he described as a particularly difficult state over the weekend. He said it had been painful for his friends to watch him in that condition, but did not explain what had caused it.
A return to professional boxing would require Broner to shed substantial weight and follow a strict training programme for an extended period. His age means time is not the main barrier, but his current state offers no clear evidence that such a transformation is under way.
Broner has a professional record of 35 wins, five defeats and one draw, with 24 victories by knockout. His success as a streamer currently offers him attention and income without the physical demands of another boxing campaign. Unless his condition changes dramatically, the gap between another championship run and his present reality appears wide.
