AFCON 2027: Kenya Restores Eldoret Venue Before CAF Inspection

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host AFCON 2027 from June 19 to July 17, 2027. Kenya has reinstated Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret as an alternative venue before a Confederation of African Football inspection on Thursday and Friday.

The CAF delegation is due to arrive in Kenya on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, before assessing the country’s preparations. The visit will cover every venue included in Kenya’s plans, with stadiums and training grounds expected to receive close attention.

Kenya’s main match venues are the 48,000-capacity Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani and the planned 60,000-capacity Talanta Sports City. The training network also includes Ulinzi Sports Complex, Nyayo National Stadium and annex pitches at both Kasarani and Talanta.

The inspection will extend beyond football facilities. CAF will also review hotels, airports and hospitals as it considers whether Kenya can meet the hosting requirements for the continental championship. Nicholas Musonye, who chairs Kenya’s Local Organising Committee, said the country was confident about its preparations and believed its supporting infrastructure was adequate.

Eldoret’s return gives the organisers another possible venue while construction and renovation continue at the principal sites. Musonye said Kenya wanted to secure a broad range of facilities that could serve sporting needs after AFCON, rather than being used only for the tournament.

The assessment comes after a February inspection across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania found that none of the proposed venues had reached the required standard at that stage. Kenya must have its facilities fully operational by January 2027, leaving the latest CAF visit to measure progress towards that deadline.

The inspection follows a meeting of Kenya’s 2027 Pamoja AFCON Oversight Committee chaired by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya. CAF is also expected to inspect preparations in Uganda and Tanzania as the three host countries move into the final phase of planning.
