NANS sport director leads 7km Unity Walk for Progress in Abakaliki

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Director of Sport Timileyin Ojumoola led student representatives on a 7km Unity Walk for Progress in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. The activity carried the message “Walk for Life, Not Drugs” and was held as part of the 90th NANS Inaugural Senate Sitting.

Student leaders and representatives from higher institutions in different parts of Nigeria took part in the walk. Their participation made the event a national student activity rather than an initiative limited to campuses in Ebonyi State.

The organisers presented physical activity as part of student wellbeing. The initiative linked exercise with improved concentration, participation in academic work and the ability to manage the pressures of higher education. It also highlighted mental and emotional balance as important elements of student success.

Drug and substance abuse was another central concern. NANS used the walk to promote prevention and collective responsibility, while drawing attention to the possible effects of substance misuse on academic performance, relationships, health and campus safety. The association’s position was that drug use can also damage the long-term educational and professional goals of young people.

Ojumoola said the gathering showed how students from different institutions and backgrounds could unite around a shared purpose. The walk therefore served both as a health initiative and as a message that progress among Nigerian students depends on cooperation.

NANS President Babatunde Akinteye praised Ojumoola for developing and organising the programme. The sports director also thanked the participants who travelled from their campuses and institutions to Abakaliki, saying their presence reflected the values of unity, responsibility and collective progress linked to the senate sitting.
