Andre Ayew explains his Ghana snub for the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Andre Ayew says Ghana mattered more than personal grievances after he was left out of the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Andre Ayew has explained why he did not publicly challenge his omission from Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying, “I cannot spit on my country because of certain people.” The 36-year-old said he chose to protect Ghana’s interests despite believing he had a strong case for selection.
Ayew made the comments on the Obi One Podcast, hosted by former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi in Accra. He said he was playing regularly for NAC Breda when Ghana’s squad was being considered and noted that some selected players had not enjoyed much club football during the season.
The former Black Stars captain said he felt wronged by individuals connected to the Ghana Football Association, the media and other areas of the game. He acknowledged the disappointment but decided not to respond publicly, explaining that his loyalty to Ghana was more important than his grievances with those involved.
Ayew has not represented Ghana since 26 March 2024, when he entered late during a 2-2 friendly draw with Uganda in Marrakesh, Morocco. His absence from the 2026 World Cup squad has revived discussion about whether his international career has reached its end, particularly because he remains involved with his club.
The forward has now shifted his attention towards continuing his career at club level. He has confirmed that negotiations are taking place with two or three clubs as he considers where to play this season. His comments mark his first detailed explanation of the decision to stay silent over the World Cup omission.
