Antonia Maponya balances Navy career and Banyana duties

Antonia Maponya is managing a dual life as a full-time employee for the South African Navy and an international footballer for Banyana Banyana. Her daily schedule involves working a shift from 7am to 4pm before heading to training with her club, University of the Western Cape (UWC), at 4.30pm.

Maponya completed her Human Resource qualification at UWC in 2021 and finished eight months of Navy training in 2022. During her military training, she took a break from football. She has structured her life to maintain a balance between her corporate career and sport, noting that her Navy position offers long-term stability for the next 33 years.

Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, the Chief of the SA Navy, described Maponya as an exemplary figure of dedication. He noted that her achievements during Women's Month demonstrate how young women can excel in leadership and service. Maponya relies on the support of teammates, colleagues, friends, and family to manage the demands of her routine, particularly as Sunday is her only day for recovery.

The flexibility of the defence force allows Maponya to potentially maintain her career regardless of where she is stationed for football. Because HR roles exist in every province, she could work in Pretoria, Durban, or other locations provided she secures permission to be stationed near her playing base.

Banyana Banyana faces Nigeria in the continental play-offs at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca tonight at 10pm. The team is looking to overcome their previous failure to secure direct World Cup qualification. Winning this match would allow them to progress to the inter-continental play-offs for a chance to reach the global tournament in Brazil next year.

Maponya stated that the team is currently reviewing previous matches to identify mistakes and build on positive aspects. She expressed a focus on the immediate challenge ahead, acknowledging that this play-off represents a difficult path to the World Cup.
