Arsenal fail in pursuit of Atletico Madrid defender Marc Pubill

Arsenal's attempt to sign Marc Pubill has been rejected by Atletico Madrid. The Gunners were prepared to spend significant funds to secure the 23-year-old defender, but the Spanish club has refused to sell.

Mikel Arteta identified the Spain international as a priority target following his performances in the Champions League semi-final against Arsenal. Pubill played as a centre-back in the first leg and as a right-back during the return fixture at the Emirates. These displays convinced Arteta to request that sporting director Andrea Berta pursue the player.

Berta made an initial approach to Atletico Madrid, but the club quickly rejected the interest. The Madrid side has declared the defender non-transferable and does not intend to allow any movement regarding his status this summer. Atletico Madrid is also looking to offer Pubill a new contract to make a future transfer more difficult.

Pubill, who moved from UD Almería to Atletico Madrid a year ago, has seen his profile rise following his recent performances. He made his debut for Spain in March and featured for the national team at the World Cup. The defender is capable of playing both at right-back and in central defence.

The interest in Pubill comes as Arsenal look to strengthen their defensive options following injuries to Jurriën Timber and William Saliba. The club has also monitored Barcelona's Jules Koundé, who offers similar versatility in the defensive line. However, Pubill currently feels a strong connection to his club and the support of the fans, with no plans to depart.
