Asante Kotoko and forward Johnson Oppong Owusu part ways

Asante Kotoko and forward Johnson Oppong Owusu have mutually agreed to end their professional relationship. The 28-year-old striker leaves the club following a period that did not meet the expectations of the Porcupine Warriors.

Oppong Owusu arrived at the club in July 2025 on a two-year contract. He brought significant experience from his time with Dreams FC, C.S. Marítimo in Portugal, FC Zlín in the Czech Republic, and KF Kukesi in Albania. While he scored an early goal against Young Apostles, he was unable to secure a consistent place in the starting lineup.

His exit is a consequence of a significant restructuring of the squad. Asante Kotoko finished the 2025/26 season in eighth place in the Ghana Premier League, a result that fell short of the club's standards. As a result, the management is planning a major overhaul that could see up to ten players depart the team.

The club is now focused on rebuilding the squad under head coach Eric Tinkler. This transition is intended to prepare the team for the 2026/27 season and a renewed attempt to compete for the league title.

Oppong Owusu is now a free agent. His previous stints in both the domestic league and various European leagues will likely attract interest from other clubs as he seeks a new team.
