Awoniyi names Super Eagles legend among biggest football heroes

Taiwo Awoniyi has named Rashidi Yekini, Thierry Henry and Didier Drogba as the football heroes who inspired him while growing up.

Taiwo Awoniyi has identified former Nigeria striker Rashidi Yekini among the football heroes who shaped his childhood, alongside Thierry Henry and Didier Drogba. The Coventry City forward made the revelation during a light-hearted interview with fellow Super Eagles player Frank Onyeka.

Awoniyi spoke about the three players during a relaxed “get to know me” session at Coventry’s training ground. The conversation came after his move to the newly promoted Premier League club, where he has reunited with Onyeka at club level.

Yekini holds a special place in Nigerian football history. He was Nigeria’s first goalscorer at a FIFA World Cup and remains one of the country’s most celebrated strikers. Awoniyi’s inclusion of the late forward underlines the influence of Nigeria’s leading football figures on the next generation.

Henry and Drogba brought the other two parts of Awoniyi’s inspiration. The Frenchman became one of the leading forwards of his era during his time at Arsenal, while Drogba established himself as a major African striker and a Chelsea icon.

The interview also offered a glimpse of the connection between Awoniyi and Onyeka, who have already shared the Super Eagles dressing room. Their partnership now continues at Coventry, adding another Nigerian link to the club’s Premier League squad.

Awoniyi joined Coventry permanently from Nottingham Forest earlier in the week in a deal reported to be worth about £9 million. His previous period at Forest included important goals, although injuries affected his consistency.

The transfer gives the Nigerian striker another chance to make an impact in the Premier League. With Coventry back in the top flight, Awoniyi will aim to regain his best form and play a significant role in the club’s campaign to remain there.
