Ben Shalom claims Martin Bakole is ruining his career
Promoter Ben Shalom criticizes Martin Bakole's inactivity and poor conditioning following a series of setbacks after his win over Jared Anderson.
Promoter Ben Shalom believes Martin Bakole is damaging his own career through a lack of activity and poor physical conditioning. Shalom, who has promoted the fighter for many years, suggested that the financial success Bakole has achieved may have diminished his competitive drive.
Bakole's trajectory shifted significantly following his August 2024 victory over Jared Anderson at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. In that fight, Bakole weighed 284.5 pounds and secured a five-round stoppage, a result that earned him widespread recognition in the heavyweight division.
Since that breakthrough, Bakole has struggled with his weight and consistency. In February 2025, he accepted a fight against Joseph Parker on just two days' notice and weighed 310 pounds. Parker defeated him via a second-round stoppage. Less than three months later, Bakole weighed 299 pounds for a bout against Efe Ajagba, which ended in a 10-round majority draw.
Shalom noted on talkSPORT Boxing that Bakole's fitness levels have been inconsistent and that opportunities have passed him by. He stated that he turned the fighter into a multi-millionaire and prioritized his career, but expressed disappointment in his current state. Shalom questioned if the money earned during Bakole's rise has affected his hunger to compete.
Bakole has not competed in a professional match since May 3, 2025. While his win over Anderson positioned him for major heavyweight opportunities at age 31, his subsequent weight fluctuations and recent results have stalled his progress. Shalom expressed a desire to see the fighter return to the ring.
