Benjamin Arthur joins Portsmouth on season-long loan from Brentford
Ghanaian-heritage defender Benjamin Arthur has completed a season-long loan move from Brentford to Portsmouth to gain Championship experience.
Portsmouth have secured the signing of defender Benjamin Arthur on a loan deal that will last for the entire season. The 20-year-old centre-back arrives at Fratton Park from Premier League side Brentford.
Arthur will wear the number two shirt for the club during the 2026/27 campaign. The defender, who has represented England at the under-20 level, brings experience from previous stints in both Scotland and England. He spent the latter half of the previous season on loan at Celtic, where he made six appearances and contributed to a domestic league and cup double.
Before his move to Brentford in 2023, Arthur developed at Peterborough United. He initially played for the Brentford B team but earned the club's Under-21 Player of the Year award following a successful 2024/25 season in which he helped the side win the Professional Development League. His form led to a senior debut for the Bees in a Carabao Cup match against Aston Villa, followed by three senior appearances before his loan to Celtic.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating that the defender will bolster the team's defensive options. Mousinho noted that Arthur possesses the standard attributes of a centre-back and is comfortable playing the ball with his feet.
The move allows the defender to compete in the Championship as Portsmouth prepares for its third straight season in the division. Arthur, who holds Ghanaian heritage, will look to build on his recent top-flight and cup experience during his time with the club.
