Bivol likely to face Callum Smith instead of Beterbiev trilogy

Dmitry Bivol is more likely to meet Callum Smith next than return to the ring for a third fight with Artur Beterbiev. The proposed Smith bout would be a defence of Bivol’s IBF, WBO and WBA light-heavyweight titles, with the fighters given until August 20 to reach an agreement before purse bids can be ordered.

The change in direction was indicated by Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn, who listed Smith against Bivol as the most likely next fight in an Instagram story. Bivol and Beterbiev had been expected to complete their rivalry later this year or in early 2027, but that plan now appears less likely.

Bivol and Beterbiev have split their two previous meetings. Beterbiev won their first contest by majority decision in October 2024 to become the undisputed champion at 175 pounds. Bivol took revenge in the rematch just over four months later, winning on scores of 116-112 and 115-113.

Bivol then had to undergo back surgery, keeping him out of competition until his return last May. He marked that comeback by retaining his three world titles against Michael Eifert, winning every round on the judges’ scorecards. Beterbiev has not fought since his defeat in the rematch.

Smith holds the WBO interim title and is the mandatory challenger for Bivol’s belt. The 36-year-old Briton has also been inactive since February 2025, when he defeated Joshua Buatsi by unanimous decision in a highly regarded fight.

Smith had been scheduled to box David Morrell last April but withdrew because of an injury. Morrell subsequently suffered a surprise defeat by Zak Chelli. A fight with Bivol would now give Smith the opportunity to challenge for a world title at a second weight, while leaving the Beterbiev trilogy unresolved.
