Black Queens draw Ecuador in FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 play-off

Ghana will face Ecuador, Uzbekistan and Papua New Guinea from 24 November to 5 December 2026 in the first phase of the Brazil 2027 play-offs.

Ghana’s Black Queens will face Ecuador, Uzbekistan and Papua New Guinea in the preliminary phase of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament. The three-match route will run from 24 November to 5 December 2026, keeping Ghana’s hopes of reaching the tournament in Brazil alive after the team missed out on automatic qualification.

Ghana will begin against Ecuador on Matchday One. Uzbekistan will provide the second test on Matchday Two, before Papua New Guinea completes the preliminary-phase schedule on Matchday Three. The sequence gives the Black Queens a clearly defined route through the opening stage, but every match will carry significance because only the strongest teams will continue.

The preliminary phase involves six teams, with the top two advancing to the final phase of the play-offs. The available reports do not identify the other two teams in the six-team field, but Ghana’s three confirmed opponents represent the full schedule announced for the Black Queens in this opening round.

The draw follows a difficult campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana’s automatic qualification hopes ended with a 2-1 quarter-final defeat by Malawi, who went on to reach the final. That result denied the Black Queens a direct path to the World Cup and placed greater importance on the subsequent play-in match.

Ghana responded by defeating Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in that play-in fixture. The victory secured the Black Queens’ place in the intercontinental play-offs and provided a second opportunity to remain in contention for Brazil 2027. Their progress now depends on how they perform across the three matches scheduled for the preliminary phase.

The opening meeting with Ecuador will set the tone for the campaign. Ghana will then have Uzbekistan as its second opponent before facing Papua New Guinea in the final match. The order means the Black Queens will not face any of the three teams twice, leaving the group-stage standings to be decided over one meeting with each confirmed opponent.

Advancing from the preliminary phase would take Ghana into the final phase of the play-offs, where places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be at stake. The competition therefore offers a route back to the global tournament even after the Black Queens’ WAFCON quarter-final exit. Ghana’s last result in that continental campaign was not enough for automatic qualification, but the win over Côte d’Ivoire ensured the World Cup campaign continued.

The dates also give the team a defined preparation window before the opening match on 24 November. Ghana will need to manage a schedule that stretches into December, with Papua New Guinea awaiting on the final matchday. The preliminary phase ends on 5 December, when the teams’ positions will determine which two continue to the final stage.

For the Black Queens, the draw turns the wider qualification objective into three immediate assignments: Ecuador first, Uzbekistan second and Papua New Guinea last. Success would move Ghana closer to a return to the Women’s World Cup, while failure to finish among the top two in the six-team preliminary phase would end the Brazil 2027 pursuit. The campaign begins on 24 November 2026.
