Bongani Zungu set for shock India move after AmaZulu departure

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu has agreed to join India’s Malappuram FC after leaving AmaZulu.

Bongani Zungu is set to continue his career in India after agreeing terms with Malappuram FC. The 33-year-old midfielder is expected to join the Super League Kerala club once the remaining formalities are completed in the coming days.

Zungu is currently a free agent following his departure from AmaZulu in May. His spell with Usuthu ended after failing to restore the form that made him one of South Africa’s most prominent midfielders.

The move would give Zungu another opportunity abroad after a difficult return to the Premier Soccer League. He rejoined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2023, but his second spell with the club lasted only two seasons before he moved on to AmaZulu.

Zungu first established himself at Sundowns before leaving South Africa for Europe in 2016. He played for Portuguese club Vitória Guimarães, French side Amiens and Scottish giants Rangers during his time overseas. His Rangers period included notable performances, although disciplinary problems eventually played a part in his departure.

His return to South Africa has not matched the impact of his first Sundowns spell. The midfielder struggled to reproduce his best level at both Sundowns and AmaZulu, while his involvement with Bafana Bafana has also diminished.

Zungu has not been selected for any of the last three major international tournaments. At 33, a return to the national team appears increasingly unlikely, making the proposed Malappuram move an important new chapter in the later stages of his playing career.
