Bruno Guimaraes makes Arsenal debut in 1-1 draw against Como
Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimaraes featured for the first time as the Premier League champions drew 1-1 with Como in their final pre-season friendly.
Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimaraes made his first appearance for the club during a 1-1 draw against Como at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. The match served as the Gunners' final pre-season friendly before their upcoming Community Shield fixture against Manchester City.
Guimaraes, who joined the club from Newcastle last week, entered the game at half-time. Arsenal took the lead through a goal from Myles Lewis-Skelly, who capitalised on a misplaced pass from Como goalkeeper Jean Butez. However, Martin Baturina equalised for the visitors before the interval by scoring against Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Manager Mikel Arteta noted that the Brazilian midfielder had only participated in three training sessions prior to his introduction. Arteta stated that Guimaraes was eager to secure minutes and experience playing in front of the home supporters. The manager added that a strong connection was already evident that would improve the squad.
While Guimaraes debuted, several other players saw action in the match. Eberechi Eze, David Raya, Mikel Merino, and Noni Madueke all made their first pre-season appearances. Conversely, Mikel Arteta opted to leave Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Martin Zubimendi out of the lineup despite their recent return from World Cup duty.
Following the conclusion of regulation time, the two teams participated in a penalty shootout. Arsenal won the shootout 4-3, with Christos Tzolis converting the final decisive penalty.
Looking ahead to the Community Shield on Sunday, Mikel Merino expressed the squad's desire to compete and provide happiness to the supporters. The match concludes Arsenal's preparations before they face Manchester City in their first competitive fixture of the new campaign.
