Brydon Carse dropped from England squad after nightclub incident

Brydon Carse, 31, has been removed from England’s squad for the second Test against Pakistan after an incident in Derby city centre. The Durham fast bowler will not be available for Thursday’s match at Lord’s while police enquiries continue.

Carse was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly on Saturday night. He was later released after agreeing to leave the area. Video shared on social media appeared to show police escorting him away from a nightclub in handcuffs.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has selected Hampshire seamer Sonny Baker as his replacement. Carse was not included in England’s team for the first Test at Headingley, but he had been playing for Durham when the incident occurred.

Earlier on Saturday, Carse and Matthew Potts helped Durham defeat Derbyshire by 338 runs in the County Championship. Potts and former England captain Ben Stokes were also visible in footage connected with the incident, although neither has been accused of an offence.

The decision comes shortly after Test captain Joe Root said England had ended their midnight curfew. The restriction had been introduced after a series of off-field incidents during tours of New Zealand and Australia. One of those incidents involved white-ball captain Harry Brook and a nightclub bouncer in Wellington.

England have also dealt with disciplinary issues after recent Test celebrations. Stokes and Gus Atkinson were suspended following events after England’s opening Test against New Zealand. They were subsequently cleared of violent conduct but received written warnings for breaching their contractual responsibilities.

Carse’s omission means England will prepare for the Lord’s Test without one of the bowlers in their wider squad, while Baker receives an opportunity to join the group as the investigation into the Derby incident remains ongoing.
