CAF President Motsepe says FIFA members must vote on Infantino

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has stated that the future of FIFA President Gianni Infantino should be determined by the 211 member associations during the March 2027 election. This position comes as Infantino faces pressure to resign following disputes regarding governance and proposals for private investment in international tournaments.

Motsepe argued that any opposition to the current leadership should follow established democratic procedures. He suggested that if individuals wish to challenge Infantino, they should submit their names as candidates for the upcoming vote. He noted that the election process is the appropriate mechanism for members to express their confidence or lack thereof in the president.

While some elements within various confederations have criticized Infantino, CAF's executive committee and its 54 member associations have shown loyalty to him. This support is linked to his decision to increase the number of African teams participating in the World Cup.

Motsepe emphasized the importance of maintaining unity and cooperation to advance football despite existing difficulties. He stated that challenges must be addressed and resolved so the sport can continue to grow. He also noted that any president who fails to follow proper governance should be held accountable through formal questioning.

The decision regarding the FIFA presidency will be made at the 77th FIFA Congress. This event is scheduled to take place in Rabat, Morocco, on March 18, 2027.
