Caspar Jander remains doubt for Southampton opener at Watford

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert says German midfielder Caspar Jander is the only fitness concern ahead of the Championship season opener.

Caspar Jander is the only player whose availability remains uncertain for Southampton's opening Sky Bet Championship match against Watford this Sunday. Manager Tonda Eckert identified the German midfielder as his sole fitness concern heading into the new campaign.

The 23-year-old has been sidelined for four weeks after leaving the pitch during a pre-season friendly against Eastleigh. While Jander participated in training on the pitch today, Eckert noted that a final decision regarding his involvement will be made late. The manager is considering whether to risk the midfielder for a few minutes of action or delay his return by another week.

Aside from Jander, the Southampton squad is fully fit for the season opener. Eckert expressed satisfaction with the physical condition of his players, stating the team is prepared for the demands of full 90-minute matches. He noted that the squad avoided significant injury issues during the pre-season period.

The roster also includes recent addition Divin Mubama, who joined the club on loan from Manchester City earlier this week. Eckert described the current state of the squad as strong and positive as they prepare for their first competitive fixture.
