Christiaan Maas nomination for SA Sports Awards hailed as honour

Christiaan Maas’ father has welcomed his son’s nomination for Sportsman of the Year after a standout 2025 season in amateur golf.

Christiaan Maas’ nomination for Sportsman of the Year at the SA Sports Awards has been described by his father as a major honour for the 23-year-old golfer. Maas is competing for the award against swimmer Pieter Coetze and boxer Kevin Lerena.

The ceremony will be held at Sun City in the North West on Sunday night. Maas will not attend because of his golf commitments in the United States, where he is based. His father will represent him at the event.

The nomination came as a surprise to the family. Maas was playing golf when he received the news and became distracted enough to make a double birdie. His father said the recognition carried special meaning because it represented national acknowledgment rather than a school-level award.

Maas’ strongest case comes from his achievements in 2025. He helped South Africa win the Eisenhower Trophy in Singapore, a team competition regarded as the World Cup of amateur golf. South Africa’s victory was its best performance in the event.

Maas also won the individual competition by a wide margin, adding a personal achievement to the team success. Earlier in the year, he recorded his first college victory in the United States while representing the University of Texas.

Those results have strengthened the view that Maas has significant potential as he continues his career after turning professional. His father also noted that the golfer has already collected major titles despite his age and having only recently moved into the professional game.

The awards nomination arrives during an important personal period for Maas as well. He is due to marry at the end of the year, adding another notable milestone to a season in which his performances have brought him national recognition.
