Dambile targets South African 200m record at Diamond League final

Sinesipho Dambile will attempt to break South Africa’s 200m record of 19.69 seconds at the Diamond League final. The 24-year-old sprinter has already lowered his personal best to 19.74 seconds and believes he can close the remaining gap to Clarence Munyai’s mark, set in 2018.

Dambile enters the race after a strong season that included Commonwealth Games gold. His performance in the Commonwealth Games final strengthened his belief that he has the speed and form required to challenge the national record.

The South African will face Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, American Kenneth Bednarek, Puerto Rico’s Jose Figueroa, Switzerland’s Timothé Mumenthaler, Cuba’s Reynier Mena and Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba. The field gives Dambile a demanding test as he pursues the fastest 200m time in South African history.

Breaking the record at the final is his immediate ambition, but Dambile is not treating the race as his only opportunity. He has indicated that he will continue pursuing the mark if it does not fall now, with the Ultimate Championships in Budapest later this month also offering another chance.

Dambile’s longer-term objective is to reach the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles as South Africa’s 200m record-holder. For now, he is focused on producing the race that can take him beyond his 19.74 personal best and under Munyai’s 19.69 standard.

The sprinter has also stressed that he does not want to impose a fixed deadline on the record attempt. Achieving it at the Diamond League final would be a major step, but he remains prepared to keep working towards it if the breakthrough comes later.
