Dave Rennie backs Ruben Love despite Richie Mo'unga arrival

All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie has maintained his support for Ruben Love as the primary flyhalf despite the arrival of Richie Mo'unga. Rennie confirmed that the jersey currently belongs to Love, noting that the player has performed well.

Love recently led the Hurricanes to a Super Rugby title and has delivered strong performances in matches against Ireland, Italy, and France. The 25-year-old faces competition within a touring squad that includes four flyhalves, or five when including Damian McKenzie. The group also features Beauden Barrett and Josh Jacomb. Mo'unga is scheduled to arrive in the Republic on Friday.

Rennie stated that the competition among the flyhalves is healthy and that the players are supportive of the selection process. While acknowledging Mo'unga's experience, the head coach emphasized that every player must earn their place. He noted that the squad is focused on building depth in key positions.

The coach met with all the flyhalves before discussing the situation with Love. Rennie explained that his responsibility is to select the best available players, particularly now that Mo'unga has signed with New Zealand Rugby. He mentioned that Love was aware of the signing and views the situation as a learning opportunity.

Squad depth has become a priority following an ankle injury to Damian McKenzie. Although McKenzie is expected to be fit for the upcoming Test, his injury highlights the need for versatile players, as much of the fullback cover is drawn from the flyhalf group.

In terms of upcoming action, Love showed strong form against the Sharks on Tuesday. Josh Jacomb is set to start against the Bulls this Saturday.
