Dele-Bashiru becomes third Super Eagles injury concern before AFCON

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has become the third Super Eagles player to suffer an early-season injury concern, with Nigeria’s first AFCON qualifying matches scheduled for September. The 25-year-old Lazio midfielder was replaced after 54 minutes during his side’s Serie A victory over Bologna.

Dele-Bashiru started the match after being selected by Lazio’s new coach, Gennaro Gattuso. He was withdrawn in the second half, with Davide Frattesi coming on in his place, after appearing to suffer a hamstring problem.

The midfielder’s condition has not yet been clarified. A proper medical assessment is expected to determine the extent of the injury and whether he will be available when Nigeria begin their qualification campaign.

His setback adds to the concerns around coach Eric Chelle’s squad. Semi Ajayi was injured after scoring Hull City’s opening goal in their 2-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League. Hull had returned to the top flight after promotion from the Championship.

Femi Azeez is also facing a spell on the sidelines after being diagnosed with a muscular problem. The winger made his Super Eagles debut during the Unity Cup in the summer, but his injury was confirmed several days before Dele-Bashiru’s issue.

The three players now form an early fitness list for Chelle as Nigeria prepare for the September qualifiers. Dele-Bashiru’s diagnosis will be particularly important after he was trusted with a starting role by Gattuso in Lazio’s opening league match.
