Democracy Cup: Tinkler and Kapor meet in Kotoko-Hearts test

Asante Kotoko coach Erik Tinkler and Accra Hearts of Oak counterpart Nebojsa Kapor will face an early test when their teams meet in the 2025 Democracy Cup at Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Friday. The competition began in 2024, with Kotoko winning the first edition by beating Hearts 2-1.

The match will be the first major test for both expatriate coaches since they took charge of the Ghanaian giants. It also gives Tinkler and Kapor an opportunity to measure their squads before the new Ghana Premier League season begins.

Hearts are the defending Democracy Cup holders after defeating Accra Great Olympics 1-0 last year. Kapor’s side will therefore be trying to retain the trophy, while also seeking to settle the disappointment of losing to Kotoko in the competition’s inaugural meeting.

The fixture is officially a pre-season game, but the rivalry between the clubs adds significance beyond preparation. Both sides have previously won the trophy, and the winner of Friday’s match will also earn the chance to face English Championship club Sunderland in an international friendly.

The game could provide the first competitive appearances for several new Hearts players, including Ebenezer Amoah and John Atwi. Kotoko have also recruited during the off-season and may introduce Youssef Yagoub, Eric Gbeta, Esmat Abdalhamid and Stephen Amankona.

For Tinkler and Kapor, the meeting offers an early view of how their tactical plans and new additions are taking shape. The result will not define either club’s season, but victory in a major domestic rivalry would give either coach an encouraging start to his tenure.
