Efunkoya U-15 Table Tennis Tournament Begins with Two-Day Clinic

The 7th National U-15 Table Tennis Championships commenced with a two-day training clinic at the National Stadium to prepare young athletes.

The Adegboyega Efunkoya Sports Foundation has launched the seventh edition of the National U-15 Table Tennis Championships. The event began with a two-day clinic held at the National Stadium indoor hall from August 11 to 12.

This training session serves as a precursor to the main tournament, which is scheduled to run from August 13 to 15. Hundreds of young competitors are participating in the clinic to improve their tactical approaches, footwork, and strokes. The programme also focuses on modern training methods, physical conditioning, and instilling discipline to prepare players for high-level competition and national selection.

Babatunde Obisanya, the former national team coach and current Chairman of the Foundation, noted the significant global support from administrators, enthusiasts, and former players living in the diaspora. He stated that the foundation aims to uphold the legacy of Dr. Adegboyega Efunkoya by ensuring athletes balance their sporting careers with education. Obisanya added that the foundation introduces new innovations every year and remains committed to supporting the schooling of high-performing players.

The championship has a history of developing talent for Nigeria's national squads. Matthew Kuti, who was identified during the first edition, is now a member of the senior national team and the current U-19 champion in Africa. Other notable alumni include Khadijat Musa and the Ayoola siblings—Umar, Usman, and Kabirat—who are current junior national team representatives.

The foundation was established to honour Dr. Adegboyega Efunkoya, the former chairman of the Nigerian Table Tennis Federation. By promoting the sport within primary and secondary schools, the organization seeks to help Nigeria achieve a position among the top ten table tennis nations globally.
