Ghana admits lack of readiness for 2027 U20 AFCON hosting

Ghana is currently working to meet the requirements for hosting the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite being awarded the hosting rights in April 2026, the country faces significant preparation challenges.

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has admitted that the nation is not ready to host the tournament at this moment. He noted that the country would be unable to host the competition in its current venues if required immediately.

Ankrah identified funding and the improvement of structures required by CAF as the primary obstacles. He stated that the NSA is currently in a transition period focused on upgrading venues, which includes improving the quality of the grass on playing surfaces.

The Director General explained that a formal roadmap will be established once CAF provides the final approval. He expressed confidence that the country can meet necessary deadlines and be prepared to host the rest of the continent before the tournament begins.

Ghana aims to have many of the facilities intended for the competition ready by the end of this year. The tournament is expected to support football development and provide a boost to local economies and infrastructure.

This event follows Ghana's history of hosting various FIFA and CAF sanctioned tournaments. The 2027 U20 AFCON will serve as a platform for Africa's youth talents to display their skills on a global stage.
