Ghana can become volleyball powerhouse, says FIVB instructor

Ghana has the potential to establish itself as a major force in volleyball both on the continent and globally. This assessment was made by Mustafa Achuche, an FIVB-certified instructor, following the conclusion of a five-day coaching course at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Level One Coaches Course was a joint initiative involving the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the Ghana Volleyball Federation (GVF), and Olympic Solidarity. A total of 39 aspiring coaches participated in the programme, consisting of 28 individuals from Ghana and 12 from Nigeria. This event marked the first time in more than five years that a fully funded FIVB programme has been held in Ghana.

During the intensive training, which started on August 3, participants studied modern game strategies, match analysis, physical conditioning, and sports psychology. The curriculum focused on replacing older training methods with evidence-based approaches used in elite volleyball. Graduates of the course are now qualified to manage grassroots development, identify new talent, and support national team pipelines.

Achuche, who has conducted coaching programmes throughout Europe and Africa, noted that the passion for the sport in Ghana provides a strong foundation for growth. He emphasized that improving the quality of coaching is the essential first step in developing the game. He suggested that with sufficient dedication, Ghanaian athletes can reach the same levels of success seen in nations like Brazil, Tunisia, and Egypt.

The instructor also encouraged young people to view volleyball as a professional career rather than just a hobby. He noted that opportunities exist in professional play, officiating, coaching, and sports administration. He stated that the sport can provide economic opportunities and become a national pastime through discipline and commitment.
