Ghana defender David Oduro set to leave Barcelona after two years

Ghana left-back David Oduro is nearing an exit from Barcelona after two seasons with Barça Atlètic, with Aston Villa leading the interest.

Ghana defender David Oduro is nearing the end of his time at Barcelona after two seasons with the club’s reserve team, Barça Atlètic. The 19-year-old left-back is attracting interest from several clubs as he prepares to leave Catalonia.

Barcelona have decided they can allow Oduro to move on because they believe they have enough options in his position. The club is expected to keep 50 percent of his rights in any future transfer, preserving a financial and sporting interest in his next move.

Oduro had been linked with Sturm Graz earlier in the summer, but Barcelona initially turned down the Austrian club’s proposal while reviewing their squad at left-back. The Ghanaian was understood to favour a move to a higher division, with Sturm Graz also offering the possibility of European football.

The situation changed after Jordi Pesquer’s progress. Pesquer joined the first-team group during pre-season, while Barcelona also added Ecuadorian defender Josué Caicedo. Those developments have strengthened the club’s belief that Oduro can depart without leaving a shortage at left-back.

Aston Villa are currently considered the strongest candidates for the Ghanaian. The Premier League club is planning for Oduro to continue his development with Annecy in France’s Ligue 2, with both clubs belonging to the same ownership group.

Portuguese side Tondela are also pursuing Oduro. The club reportedly opened room for him after selling its starting left-back to Riga. Marítimo have likewise made an approach, leaving Oduro with several possible destinations as his Barcelona spell approaches its conclusion.
