Ghana's Black Princesses urged to make history at Women's World Cup

Ghana’s Black Princesses have made seven consecutive appearances at the Women’s World Cup without reaching the knockout stage. Their latest attempt begins on 6 September 2026 against Ecuador, with Korea Republic and France also in the group.

Ghana Football Association president and CAF second vice-president Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku visited the squad in Poland and urged the players to use the tournament to change that record. He said the team possessed the quality required to progress after years of regular participation without a place in the second round.

Okraku identified the Ecuador match as a key moment in Ghana’s campaign. He stressed that a strong opening performance could shape the team’s approach and confidence in the matches that follow.

The GFA president also rejected the idea that Ghana’s opponents were beyond the team’s reach. He pointed to the quality within the squad and said the players could win matches in the group and secure qualification for the knockout phase.

He linked the challenge to the work undertaken by the players and the sacrifices made during their preparations. Okraku said those efforts should now produce a breakthrough, while asking the current squad to honour teammates who had been involved in the build-up but did not make the final selection.

Okraku was joined at the training ground by Michael Osekre, the GFA’s chief of staff, and Jiji Alifoe, president of Dreams Football Club. He also reaffirmed the association’s backing for the squad and praised the work of the technical team and the players’ conduct. Progress beyond the group would be a landmark achievement after seven successive tournament appearances without advancement.
