Ghana to learn Women's World Cup play-off opponents on August 20

The Black Queens will find out their opponents for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027 play-off tournament on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The draw is scheduled to take place at the Home of FIFA in Zurich at 14:00 local time.

Ghana qualified for this preliminary phase following a 2-1 victory against Côte d'Ivoire in the WAFCON play-in match held in Casablanca. They will join five other nations in the draw, including South Africa, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan, Ecuador, and Papua New Guinea.

Teams have been organized into three pots according to the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking from June 16. Ghana and Ecuador are in Pot 3, while South Africa and Papua New Guinea occupy Pot 2. Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan are placed in Pot 1.

Regulations for the draw prevent teams from the same confederation from being drawn against one another. This rule ensures that Ghana cannot be paired with South Africa during the process.

The preliminary phase is set to occur between November 24 and December 5, 2026, during the international window. Each of the six participating teams will play three matches in this stage.

To progress toward the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, Ghana must finish in the top two of their group. The top two teams from the preliminary phase will move into a final phase consisting of six teams. This final stage will involve three knockout paths, with the three winners earning spots at the World Cup.
