Gyan family thanks football community after father’s one-week rites

The Gyan family has thanked Ghana’s football community and other well-wishers after the one-week observation for George Gyan Bafour Mensah, the father of former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan and his siblings. The gathering took place on August 21 at the New Gbawe Cluster of Schools AstroTurf.

The family said the support came through attendance at the mourning ceremony, condolence messages, prayers and other assistance during the period following George Gyan Bafour Mensah’s death. They expressed appreciation for the presence and encouragement offered by those who stood with them.

Among those recognised were Sports Minister Kofi Adams, Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku, boxing great Prof. Azumah Nelson and Ghana football legend Abedi Pele and his family. Former GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi was also included in the family’s acknowledgement.

The family further thanked Kenya’s Capt. Irene Ndanu, the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana, members of the media, football administrators and colleagues. Members of Parliament, relatives, friends, religious leaders, businesspeople, musicians, actors and other sympathisers were also recognised for their support.

Several prominent members of Ghana’s football community joined the Gyan family at the one-week observation. The family said the affection, attendance and comforting words had helped them through the difficult period and expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed.

The final rites and burial of George Gyan Bafour Mensah are scheduled for November 7, 2026. The family also offered prayers for blessings and renewed strength for all those who supported them as preparations continue for the burial ceremonies.
