Cardoso backs Mothiba to find rhythm at Sundowns in PSL season
Miguel Cardoso says limited starts have made it harder for Lebo Mothiba to settle at Mamelodi Sundowns, but training form has sustained his faith.
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has backed 30-year-old Lebo Mothiba to find his rhythm at the club. The striker has made 22 appearances since joining Sundowns but has yet to establish himself as a regular starter.
Mothiba has mainly operated behind Brayan León and Iqraam Rayners in the attacking pecking order. Cardoso believes that limited continuity has made it difficult for the forward to build confidence and momentum when he is introduced or selected.
The coach’s support followed a match in which Mothiba missed an opportunity that could have resulted in a goal. Cardoso did not view that moment in isolation, pointing out that the game had produced several chances that were not converted. He also used Lucas Ribeiro’s earlier scoring drought as an example of how a striker’s fortunes can change after a difficult spell.
Cardoso said the connection between confidence and performance is especially strong for forwards. In Mothiba’s case, the coach believes the lack of regular starts has made it harder to settle into matches, particularly when León and Rayners have been the preferred options.
The striker’s work at training has strengthened the coaching staff’s belief in him. Cardoso has been impressed by Mothiba’s attitude, his performances in practice games and his finishing during those sessions, while also highlighting the energy he brings to the group.
Sundowns are also managing the workload of their attacking players. Cardoso explained that León had played three consecutive matches after an interrupted pre-season and was still showing signs of fatigue, making a rotation necessary. The plan was to divide the available 45 minutes between the forwards to maintain intensity, a situation that could create further chances for Mothiba to demonstrate his value.
