Afriyie disputes GHC1m claim ahead of Ghana Premier League season

Former Ghana Football Association vice-president George Afriyie has challenged the claim that the GHC1 million promised to each Ghana Premier League club is the largest financial support they have received from the Association. The payment is due to go to all 18 clubs before the 2026/27 season.

GFA president Kurt Okraku announced the allocation during the Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress. The funding is connected to the GFA’s broadcast and commercialisation agreement with Adesa Productions Limited, while the clubs received an equivalent GHC1 million allocation last season.

Afriyie said the figures from the period of the Glo sponsorship were higher when the different payments were combined. He said each club received $120,000 from the telecommunications company and a further $40,000 from broadcast rights.

He also stressed that the earlier money came through sponsorship and broadcasting rather than state funding. That comparison forms the basis of his objection to describing the latest GHC1 million allocation as the biggest amount clubs have received through the GFA.

Afriyie has separately raised questions about the source of the new payment. He said clubs, including Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, should first seek clarity on where the money is coming from before accepting the figure as financial support.

He has also questioned why the GFA would not publicly credit the government if state funds were involved. His comments place the current allocation against previous commercial arrangements that delivered direct payments to Ghana Premier League clubs.
