Hasim Rahman targets history in comeback at 53 for Indiana title

Hasim Rahman, a two-time heavyweight champion, is preparing to return to the ring at 53 and challenge boxing’s record for the oldest heavyweight world champion. He is scheduled to face Phillip Triantafillo for the USA Indiana State heavyweight title on September 24.

Triantafillo has a 4-4 record, while Rahman is seeking his first victory in more than 15 years. The bout will be the former champion’s first since ending his professional career in 2014.

Rahman’s target is the mark set by George Foreman, who regained the heavyweight championship at 45 when he stopped Michael Moorer in 1994. A successful return by Rahman would put him beyond Foreman’s age record, although the planned contest is for a state title rather than a recognised world championship.

The comeback has drawn concern because of Rahman’s age and his long time away from competition. Rahman has rejected the idea that he is taking an unnecessary risk, saying he remains physically prepared and confident in his ability to compete.

He believes the experience gained since his retirement has changed his approach to boxing. Rahman also feels that his current strength, conditioning and punching power give him a genuine chance to achieve something historic.

Rahman is best known for his two fights with Lennox Lewis. He knocked Lewis out in their first meeting, but Lewis won the rematch by stopping Rahman. The American’s planned fight with Triantafillo now offers him a route back to the ring and an opportunity to pursue the heavyweight age record held by Foreman.
