Ian Machado Garry targets welterweight title at UFC 330

Ian Machado Garry believes that winning the welterweight title this weekend will serve as proof that he has been correct about his abilities from the beginning. The Irish fighter, who holds a 17-1 record, is set to challenge Islam Makhachev in the main event of UFC 330 in Philadelphia.

Makhachev moved up from the lightweight division last year to defeat Jack Della Maddalena and claim the welterweight championship. Garry is the first challenger to face him in this weight class since that title change. Garry noted that while he is a natural welterweight and larger than Makhachev was at 155 pounds, he does not expect a significant difference in strength.

During the media day on Wednesday, Garry requested that discussions remain focused on the professional aspects of the fight rather than his previous comments regarding women. He stated that his concentration is entirely on the upcoming bout and his opponent. He also confirmed there would be no pranks during the weight cut, such as the pizza incident involving Daniel Rodriguez, because he wants to avoid any excuses.

Garry expressed that his path to this title shot was expected due to his discipline and hard work. He noted that while the reality of the championship fight has not fully set in, he seeks to face the most difficult opponents to ensure there are no questions regarding his greatness. He believes his height may provide more space for Makhachev to target his legs during the contest.

Outside of the octagon, Garry said his primary focus remains his role as a father and husband. He described his vision of waking up as a champion as being secondary to his daily life of caring for his son. While fighting is his passion, he maintains that his family is the most important aspect of his life.
