Islam Makhachev claims McGregor injury occurred during training

Islam Makhachev believes Conor McGregor's knee injury happened during his training camp rather than during his UFC 329 bout against Max Holloway.

Islam Makhachev has suggested that Conor McGregor's recent knee injury likely took place during his training camp. The 34-year-old champion disputed the idea that the injury occurred during the UFC 329 bout against Max Holloway on July 11.

McGregor suffered a torn ACL and meniscus during his return to the octagon after a five-year absence. The injury happened 69 seconds into the first round when a missed flying roundhouse kick caused him to land awkwardly on his right knee. Referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight, resulting in a TKO victory for Holloway.

Makhachev argued that the physical demands of returning to elite competition after a long hiatus can overwhelm a fighter. He stated that when athletes resume training after a long break, the body often fails or sustains injuries in the early stages. He believes McGregor's body could not endure the intensity of the preparation period.

The potential for a UFC title fight between the two has diminished following the injury. McGregor had previously expressed interest in fighting Makhachev to secure a third championship belt. However, the 38-year-old now faces recovery after undergoing surgery, with plans to return during International Fight Week 2027.

Despite the unlikely UFC matchup, Makhachev expressed interest in a boxing match with the Irishman. He recalled a conversation with Turki Alalshikh at a boxing event where he was asked about fighting McGregor. Makhachev said he was willing to accept the challenge, though he noted that communication with McGregor was difficult during the encounter.
