Italy defeat Uganda to take top spot in Challenge League

Italy defeated Uganda to end the Cricket Cranes' 12-game unbeaten run in the Challenge League. Italy reached a total of 193/9 in their 50 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat first on a difficult surface.

Uganda's spin-heavy lineup struggled to contain the Italian batters, who contributed runs across the entire team. Sumeet Verma led the bowling attack with figures of 4/49, while Alpesh Ramjani took 2/27. Joseph Baguma and Henry Ssenyondo also claimed one wicket each.

The Ugandan run chase failed to gain momentum as the batters struggled against the spin. Simon Ssesazi and Gerald Olipa both scored 19 runs, but the team adopted a defensive approach. This attempt to survive rather than take initiative resulted in all batters being dismissed for a total of 79 runs.

The result moves Italy to the top of the table, ahead of Uganda despite both teams having the same number of points. Hong Kong China currently sits four points behind the leaders. For Hong Kong China to move into second place, Uganda must lose two more matches, including their upcoming fixture against them.

Uganda faces a critical match against Hong Kong China on Wednesday. While the loss does not mathematically eliminate them from the tournament, the Cricket Cranes must win their remaining games to stay in contention for the title.
