Jesse Rodriguez accepts Gervonta Davis fight after four-division call
Jesse Rodriguez has agreed to face Gervonta Davis despite the proposed move from bantamweight to a 135-pound limit, four divisions higher.
Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez has accepted Gervonta Davis’ challenge for a fight that could require him to move up four weight classes and 17 pounds. The proposed contest would be held at a maximum of 135 pounds, while Rodriguez currently competes at bantamweight.
Rodriguez’s trainer, Robert Garcia, said Davis sent the challenge privately and that the WBA bantamweight champion responded positively. The acceptance puts Rodriguez forward for an unusual meeting with Davis, a former three-division world champion who has not yet confirmed when or where he will return.
Davis has not recorded a victory since June 2024. His only appearance since then came in March 2025, when he drew with Lamont Roach Jr. He was subsequently stripped of the WBA lightweight title because of inactivity linked to external legal issues.
The vacant lightweight belt is scheduled to be contested in October by Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi. Both fighters are unbeaten, but each is expected to enter that bout after more than a year without competing. Davis has also been connected with a rematch against Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, leaving his next weight class uncertain.
Rodriguez’s willingness to accept the Davis proposal does not appear to have displaced his other major objective. Naoya Inoue remains the Filipino-American fighter’s target, with a meeting between the pair expected to take place in Japan in February or March 2027.
For now, the Davis call-out presents a substantial physical challenge for Rodriguez. Davis would be asking the reigning bantamweight champion to compete at the lightweight limit, while his own next step remains unresolved after the loss of his WBA title and a prolonged period away from winning action.
