CAF doubles WAFCON winner prize money to $2 million

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased the winner's prize money for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to $2 million. This represents a 100 per cent rise from the $1 million awarded previously. The decision comes ahead of the final match between Malawi and Cameroon.

The total prize fund for the tournament has grown by 67 per cent, moving from $3.475 million to $5.8 million. Under the new structure, the runners-up will collect $750,000, which is a 50 per cent increase. The team finishing in third place will also see a 43 per cent rise in their reward.

Participation funding for the 16 competing nations has been raised to $150,000 per team. This is a 20 per cent increase from the $125,000 provided in the last edition. The Super Falcons of Nigeria are among the teams set to receive this updated participation amount.

CAF noted that the winner's purse has grown by 900 per cent since the current leadership began its term, rising from $200,000 to the current $2 million. During the same period, the total prize pool has seen a 495 per cent increase, climbing from $975,000 to $5.8 million.

The tournament is being hosted in Morocco from July 25 to August 16. This edition of the competition features 16 teams for the first time in its history.
