John Ekpenyong details Fanny Amun's Senate President Cup role

Honourable John Ekpenyong, the national president of the Grassroots Sports Federation (GRASOF), has clarified the reasons behind appointing Fanny Amun as an ambassador for the 3rd Senate President U-18 Annual Unity Cup. The appointment aims to leverage Amun's extensive background in youth football development for the upcoming tournament.

Ekpenyong stated that Amun was selected due to his history as a coach, administrator, instructor, and promoter within Nigerian football. The federation believes his involvement will support the competition's goals of empowering youth and discovering new talent. Amun is widely recognized for leading the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning Eaglets and previously served as the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In addition to his coaching pedigree, Amun brings administrative expertise from his time as a former technical director for the NFF and an assistant director at the Federal Ministry of Sports. Ekpenyong noted that the Edo State tactician's experience will provide significant value to the youth competition. As an ambassador, Amun is tasked with mentoring young athletes and acting as a primary representative for the tournament.

The 3rd Senate President U-18 Annual Unity Cup is scheduled to take place from October to November in the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State. The event will host 24 male and female teams arriving from different zones across Nigeria. The tournament focuses on using sports to promote national development, peace, and unity.

GRASOF expressed its support for Amun, MON, and expects his participation to help make the 2026 edition a successful celebration of youth football. The federation intends for his presence to inspire the next generation of players while championing their vision for grassroots sports development.
