Josephine Bonsu says Ghana must move past WAFCON exit

Black Queens defender Josephine Bonsu says Ghana had to move past their WAFCON quarterfinal exit to focus on their play-in match against Côte d’Ivoire. Ghana's tournament run ended following a 2-1 comeback loss to Malawi in the quarterfinals.

That defeat prevented Ghana from securing automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Instead, the result forced the team into a play-in route to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Bonsu noted that the squad dealt with emotional difficulties after the loss to Malawi. She stated that the team spent two days with low morale but argued that dwelling on the past was not productive because the result could not be changed.

Ghana secured a 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in Casablanca on Thursday. This win ensures their participation in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-Off Tournament.

The match began poorly for the Black Queens, as they trailed at halftime after Ines Konan scored an early penalty for Côte d’Ivoire. Ghana improved their performance in the second half, with Princess Marfo scoring the equaliser.

Bonsu scored the winning goal from the penalty spot to complete the comeback. The defender highlighted that the team's ability to respond in the second half was the most significant aspect of the performance.
