Justine Madugu criticises NFF over unrealistic expectations

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has criticised the Nigerian Football Federation regarding unrealistic expectations. He warned that the team cannot expect victory without significant structural improvements to the country's women's football development.

Nigeria faces South Africa this Thursday in an in-tournament playoff. The winner of this match will secure a place in the intercontinental pool for the 2027 Women’s World Cup playoffs. This fixture follows Nigeria's quarter-final exit in the current tournament in Morocco, where they lost to Cameroun.

Madugu noted that other African nations are investing heavily to improve their footballing standards. He argued that Nigeria cannot remain isolated while competitors develop their structures. The coach stated that the current gap in gameplay and results is a direct consequence of this lack of investment.

For the first time in the 28-year history of the competition, the 10-time WAFCON winners will not be competing for a medal. The Super Falcons are now fighting to maintain their record as the only African nation to have qualified for every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Madugu emphasised that there are numerous areas requiring work to ensure the team succeeds. He maintained that it is impossible to expect winning results if the necessary groundwork is not being performed. The upcoming match against Banyana Banyana serves as a vital lifeline for Nigeria's tenth World Cup appearance.
