Kasarani pitch reconstruction reaches next stage ahead of AFCON 2027

Reconstruction of the main pitch at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, has moved into its structural installation phase as Kenya continues preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Uganda and Tanzania.

The old playing surface has been fully removed, allowing contractors to begin building the foundation for a new international-standard pitch. Recent images from inside the stadium show large sections of the playing area covered with stone aggregate and gravel.

The works also include geotextile filtration membranes and underground drainage components. Perforated pipes are being incorporated into the base to help manage heavy rainfall, an important requirement for a venue intended to host elite international matches.

Surveying equipment, grid markings and laser-controlled height indicators have been placed across the stadium floor. These measures are being used to achieve consistent levels throughout the pitch area before the next construction stages begin.

Installation of the gravel foundation and drainage system is nearing completion. The project will then move towards adding the soil profile and planting the playing surface, with a hybrid grass system planned for Kasarani.

The proposed turf will combine natural grass with synthetic reinforcing fibres and is intended to meet CAF and FIFA standards for major international competition. Kasarani’s redevelopment is part of a wider national programme that also covers Nyayo National Stadium and the Talanta Sports City project.
