KCCA, NEC renew Lugogo rivalry in 2026 Uganda Premier League opener

KCCA and NEC begin their 2026 Uganda Premier League campaigns against each other at MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Saturday, August 29. The fixture comes only a week after KCCA defeated NEC 1-0 in the Fufa Super 8 final, with Said Mayanja scoring the decisive goal.

Both teams have treated that result as separate from the league opener. KCCA coach Brian Ssenyondo has made clear that his side’s attention has shifted to starting the league with a win, while NEC coach Badru Kaddu sees the rematch as an opportunity to correct the shortcomings that cost his team in the final. Kaddu has identified finishing chances and defensive discipline as key areas for NEC.

The latest meeting added another chapter to a rivalry in which NEC hold the stronger overall record. NEC have won three of the teams’ last six meetings, while KCCA have taken two victories and the other match ended level. KCCA also won last season’s reverse fixture 2-1, with Mayanja scoring twice.

KCCA enter the league season listed fifth with zero points from zero matches and a 0-0 goal record, reflecting that the campaign is yet to begin. Their recent results offer a more positive indication of their current form: they beat Mbarara City 4-1, drew 0-0 away to URA, defeated UPDF 2-1, beat Maroons 3-0 and drew 1-1 with Vipers.

KCCA will be without Anthony Emojong, who is sick. Ibrahim Kasule is also a fitness concern, although he has been included in the match-day squad. NEC have no reported injury problems, leaving forward Fahad Bayo in contention to make his debut after he was stretchered off shortly after entering the recent final.

The Lugogo meeting is one of several matches on the opening programme. SC Villa host Kitara, Lugazi face Kigezi Home Boyz, Kataka visit UPDF, Police welcome Mbarara City and newcomers Blacks Power play Ntugasaze at Hoima City Stadium.
