PRASA adds trains for 2026 Springboks and Lions rugby matches
PRASA will run dedicated rail services for three 2026 rugby matches in Johannesburg and Cape Town, including two Springboks tests.
PRASA will provide dedicated train services for three major 2026 rugby matches involving the Springboks, the Lions and the All Blacks in Gauteng and the Western Cape. The programme covers two fixtures at 10BET Ellis Park in Johannesburg and one at DHL Stadium in Cape Town.
The first Johannesburg service will support the Springboks’ All Blacks test on Saturday, 22 August. A free shuttle will run between Johannesburg Park Station and Ellis Park Station for fans with valid match tickets. Trains will operate every 15 minutes from 12:30pm until 8:30pm, with links to Gautrain services available at Park Station. The final Gautrain service will leave at 9pm.
PRASA will also run a shuttle for the Lions’ meeting with the All Blacks at Ellis Park on Tuesday, 25 August. The trains will use the same Park Station-Ellis Park Station route, running every 15 minutes from 2:30pm to 10:30pm. Unlike the first Johannesburg fixture, this service will cost R20 for a return ticket. Gautrain connections will again be available at Park Station, with the last service scheduled for 11pm.
In Cape Town, additional trains will be arranged for the Springboks’ second test against the All Blacks at DHL Stadium on Saturday, 29 August. The Western Cape rail service is intended to carry the thousands of supporters expected at the venue and provide an alternative to travelling by private car.
The extra Cape Town services are also intended to reduce congestion around the central business district and Green Point. Further details of the timetable will be released through PRASA’s digital channels, including its WhatsApp commuter groups and social media pages on X, Facebook and Instagram.
PRASA has urged passengers to reach their departure stations early and purchase return tickets before boarding where fares apply. Travellers using Isitimela Sabantu and all station facilities must follow rail safety rules, while the agency says rail will help move spectators efficiently to and from the matches.
