Berekum West MP calls for Accra Sports Stadium to be demolished and rebuilt

Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah has urged Ghana to demolish and rebuild the Accra Sports Stadium before the country hosts the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. He made the call after touring the venue and reviewing the condition of its facilities.

Kyere-Duah said the stadium’s appearance during floodlit matches does not reflect the problems found during a closer inspection. He believes the venue requires more than routine maintenance and short-term rehabilitation to remain suitable for major international football.

The lawmaker said Ghana should consider replacing the existing structure with a modern stadium designed to meet FIFA and Confederation of African Football standards. Such a facility, he argued, would be appropriate for Accra and capable of hosting matches organised under both governing bodies.

His comments come as Ghana prepares for further international commitments, including AFCON qualifiers and the 2027 U-20 AFCON. The stadium’s condition has become a growing concern as authorities face the need to provide venues that satisfy international requirements.

Kyere-Duah also described the situation as urgent, warning that cosmetic improvements would not address the stadium’s deeper structural and maintenance challenges. He said continuing to spend on temporary repairs would fail to provide a lasting solution.

The Accra Sports Stadium is one of Ghana’s best-known sporting venues and has staged domestic and international fixtures over many years. The MP’s proposal would replace the facility entirely instead of extending the life of the current structure through repeated rehabilitation work.
