Stanbic Blue Run to turn Harare blue with 5km, 10km and 21.1km
Hundreds are expected in Harare for Sunday’s Stanbic Blue Run Half Marathon, with races designed to promote fitness, wellness and community spirit.
Harare will host the Stanbic Bank Blue Run Half Marathon on Sunday, with hundreds of participants expected to take part in races over 5km, 10km and 21.1km. The event is intended to bring runners and wider communities together around health and active living.
Stanbic Bank’s head of Business and Commercial Banking, Patson Mahatchi, described the race as an event built around health, determination and community. It is open to experienced athletes seeking strong times as well as first-time participants beginning their involvement in organised fitness.
The half marathon is also being positioned as part of Harare’s sports tourism offering. Mahatchi said events of this type can raise the city’s profile as a destination for major sporting activities while supporting the development of a stronger wellness culture in Zimbabwe. That focus extends to families, workplaces and local communities.
Professional race administration will be handled by the organising club, which is responsible for logistics and the registration of participants from outside the event’s regular network. The partnership with Stanbic Bank is intended to strengthen the race’s standing within Zimbabwe’s road-running calendar and provide a well-managed experience for competitors.
The different distances give the event a broad competitive base. Elite and experienced runners will have the chance to pursue personal bests, while recreational participants can use the 5km or 10km races as an accessible entry into road running. Mahatchi is also taking part in the 10km category, viewing his participation as a personal commitment to taking greater responsibility for his health rather than a bid for victory.
The organisers believe the presence of runners with different levels of experience will underline the wider purpose of the Blue Run. Alongside performances and medals, the event is designed to encourage more people to exercise and to share in a communal sporting experience.
